Within the European AIMS 5.0 research project, SCIO member Fabmatics and Infineon Technologies Dresden successfully evaluated the new autonomous mobile robot (AMR) HERO Scout under real production conditions in a 200 mm semiconductor fab. The AMR performed fully automated transport and handling of reticle SMIF pods and 200 mm wafer carriers in lithography operations, including navigation through narrow cleanroom aisles, high-speed movements and complex handling scenarios. The results confirm that HERO Scout is technically ready for deployment in highly automated, digitalized semiconductor fabs and makes an important contribution to the goals of AIMS 5.0.
For validation, the HERO Scout prototype was deployed in Infineon Dresden's 200 mm lithography production area under real cleanroom conditions. The evaluation covered transport and handling of reticle pods and wafer carriers, navigation in complex cleanroom environments, interaction with personnel and dynamic obstacles, and driving stability at higher speeds.
The trials were conducted using dummy materials to simulate realistic operating conditions without affecting production. Across all test scenarios, HERO Scout demonstrated high reliability in navigation and handling. The system also confirmed safe interaction with its environment while meeting stability requirements. In addition, several optimization opportunities were identified for future development.
The successful validation provides an industry-relevant demonstrator within AIMS 5.0. HERO Scout combines automated reticle transport, a scalable AMR platform with AI-enabled control architecture, and seamless integration into existing fab layouts without major infrastructure modifications.
Looking ahead, HERO Scout will enable semiconductor manufacturers to gradually transition reticle and wafer logistics from manual handling toward fully autonomous operations. Combined with other AIMS 5.0 developments such as digital twins and AI-driven fleet orchestration, the solution represents an important building block for the intelligent, connected, and sustainable factories of the future, developed in Europe.
