CAN Gateway for SEMI-Compliant Integration of RFID Readers and Other CAN Devices in Semiconductor Fabs
Fabmatics, a specialist in automated material flow and handling solutions for semiconductor manufacturing and part of the SCIO Automation Group, has expanded its identification portfolio with the CAN Gateway. The communication system integrates RFID CAN bus readers and other CAN-based devices into fab networks. It meets all requirements for standardized interfaces, is scalable, and provides a unified hardware platform for connecting CAN-based components in automation environments.
In semiconductor fabs, there is an ongoing need to modernize existing equipment structures and to retrofit additional identification systems - particularly RFID solutions. These systems are often integrated via CAN-based devices that must be seamlessly incorporated into existing automation environments.
Acting as an interface between CAN bus systems and host environments, the gateway supports established semiconductor standards such as SECS-I and SECS-II/HSMS. Combined with flexible communication via Ethernet and RS232, this significantly reduces integration effort - especially in existing fabs.
By consolidating multiple device variants into a single hardware platform, the solution simplifies system landscapes and spare parts management while maintaining compatibility with existing applications. This allows for gradual migration without major architectural changes.
Its scalable architecture allows the connection of numerous RFID readers and other devices. Up to 40 RFID readers - and up to 127 readers with additional power injectors - can be supplied through a single CAN Gateway. This makes the solution ideal for retrofit and expansion scenarios for applications such as storage racks, stocker systems, and conveyor lines in 150 mm, 200 mm, and 300 mm fabs as well as for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
